CAMP LEGACY

Camp Legacy | Powered by Black Joy.

Camp Legacy embodies the belief that every child in America should have the opportunity to experience Summer Camp. It is a place where children develop independence, form valuable connections, tackle new obstacles, and immerse themselves in the great outdoors. However, the disparity in traditional overnight summer camp participation is a result of the historical barriers faced by Black individuals, as less than 10% of attendees in America identify as Black. This imbalance can create discomfort for Black campers in predominantly White spaces.

By establishing a shared identity, we witness Camp Legacy campers naturally take on challenges confidently with the support and encouragement of their peers and counselors. For example; tackling the low ropes challenge, overcoming a fear of the dark through a night hike, or lighting their first campfire. Shared customs, routines, and backgrounds provide a sense of belonging in a new environment and encourage campers to fully engage in all that Camp has to offer.

Camp Legacy organically fosters a uniquely inclusive space where campers, counselors, and staff are all "Powered by the Black joy" that they cultivate.

Camp is a place to unwind

Social media, while it can be a great entertaining tool, is often a contributing factor in the emotional challenges faced by many young people today. Camp offers a refreshing alternative where kids can disconnect from their devices and immerse themselves in the present moment.

With little internet access and a focus on outdoor activities, Camp encourages kids to engage with the world around them. Many discover that they become so absorbed in the camp experience that they don't even miss their phones. It's a reset, a chance for kids to quiet their minds and reconnect with themselves and nature.

Kids can be kids

What does it truly mean to be a kid? Camp Legacy believes childhood is an experience rich in curiosity, adventure, spontaneity, silliness, and complete freedom.

Our aim is for Camp Legacy to serve as a sanctuary for campers, a space where they can comfortably be their authentic selves, even expressing aspects of themselves – that Goofy, Loud, awkward side – that they might not usually show in their everyday lives

.

Our Core Values

WE WANT CAMPERS TO HAVE ONE OF THE BEST EXPERIENCES OF THEIR LIVES AT CAMP LEGACY AND WE BELIEVE THAT IF THEY EXPERIENCE AT LEAST ONE OF OUR CORE VALUES, THEY WOULD HAVE ACHIEVED JUST THAT!

Develop Dynamic Friendships

EACH YEAR, WE WITNESS CAMPERS ARRIVING TO THE DROP OFF LOCATION SUPER NERVOUS AND SHY ABOUT GOING TO CAMP. THEY THINK THEY WON'T MAKE ANY FRIENDS, OR THEY'RE NERVOUS ABOUT BEING AWAY FROM HOME FOR THE FIRST TIME. WE GET IT - IT'S NERVE WRACKING! BUT ONCE CAMPERS RETURN AND HOP OFF THE BUS, THEY'RE EXCHANGING PHONE NUMBERS AND SNAPCHATS AND SETTING UP FUTURE PLANS WITH THEIR NEW CAMP FRIENDS. WE LOVE TO SEE IT!

Expand Their Comfort Zone

There are plenty of opportunities for campers to challenge themselves at camp legacy. we believe trying something new and pushing yourself is essential to developing independence, confidence, and A HIGHER SENSE OF self-worth. it's also a lot of fun when you realize you can accomplish just about anything!

Embrace the Outdoors

The great outdoors offers us so much! the quiet of the woods can help us focus on the present and learn to de-stress. spotting a deer can inspire awe and wonder, forcing us to be still as not to disturb or scare it away. building a campfire can remind us that we are more than capable of doing hard things AND the importance of PATIENCE. we value these experiences and understand their importance in shaping incredible kids and future game changers.
