Providing Outdoor & Summer Camp Experiences for Black Youth.

Powered by Black Joy.

Summer Camp is full of benefits for kids across America. Offering opportunities for campers to develop friendships, challenge themselves, increase independence, and connect with nature. Yet only 4% of summer campers identify as black. we want to increase that number by creating a unique outdoor experience for black youth.

The Black Community & Summer Camps

operating a summer camp can be expensive, which can in turn impact the cost of participation. On top of that, going to camp is often a family tradition, with young campers hearing about all the good times their parent or other family members have had at summer camp in the past. Not to mention the immense racial barriers that have limited access to camping and the outdoors for the Black community over the years.

However, we believe that the overnight camp experience is extremely beneficial in promoting healthy relationships, encouraging an adventurous spirit, and increasing independence and therefore should be available to all kids regardless of race and/or socioeconomic backgrounds.

At Camp Legacy, campers experience the magic of summer camp in a space where their culture is not only recognized, but celebrated. Furthermore, They are surrounded by peers, counselors and staff who mirror their cultural background and identity.

Every year, camp legacy hosts a weekend long traditional overnight summer camp experience, complete with archery, arts & Crafts, sports, campfires, games, and tons of s'mores!

This is how we do it!

Our story is ever evolving and we are always looking at ways to engage more black youth in the outdoors. Check out where we've been, where we are, and where we're going!

Our Past

In 2020, Twin Sisters Alex and Angelica founded Young Legacies Inc with a goal of creating experiences that allowed black youth the opportunity to engage with the outdoors. Working directly with students at KIPP Bridge Academy in Oakland, CA, Young Legacies hosted campus games and events, Nature based field trips, and an overnight camping experience for students - our inaugural Camp Legacy Session.

Our Present

Since 2023, Young Legacies has hosted camp legacy - an overnight weekend summer camp experience - for black youth in Oakland and the surrounding area. Each year, camp legacy rents out a summer campground that allows campers to engage in all things summer camp - archery, ropes courses, campfires, group games, and much more! Each year we invite more campers, hire more staff, and in turn have more fun!

Our Future

While campers have an incredible time at camp legacy, we know that more time and a permanent campground would allow for an even deeper connection to the outdoors and each other. In 2023, Alex and Angelica purchased 43 acres of land in Northern California with a goal to develop a permanent home for camp legacy. This campground would be reserved during the summer months for camp Legacy allowing us to create our own unique space where campers (and staff) can fully engage in the great outdoors with each other!
